I am a poem writer and I will not say that I am any good but I have wrote my first fifteen poems and some of them have been read more than just twice. So therefore I will try and share a bit of my wisdom.
Let us start at the beginning with step two. Okay okay I will try and take this one serious. First find a feeling. It could be love, pain, hurt or anything. Find the feeling and really feel it, note it is possible to write a poem without a feeling, I just find that the poems get that much better when there is a feeling.
Now that you have a feeling try to describe it in short sentences. It is a poem not a novel therefore keep it short. Make your sentences say something without revealing too much. It can be like "Your smile make me shine" or "You left me as blue as your eyes". Simple sentences that does not reveal everything but when the next sentences come it all can change meaning. If we follow up on "Your smile make me shine" it could turn out like "Your smile make me shine, of the pain you bring to my mind" and again over to "Your smile make me shine, of the pain you bring to my mind, but when my little girl take my hand, the pain is removed to another land". As you can see every sentence brings new meaning.
Now third step. There is no rule for how a poems structure is meant to be. Therefore just follow the content of the poem. If you feel it needs a lot of pauses make a lot of pauses. If you want it to look like a Christmas tree, you have a challenge but do it.
My last tip for this is to use really good words. Do not just use simple boring non-meaning words. Unless unless it fits to the poem.
And now I will finish the little poem I started and I will do it as a remembrance for some of the kids and spouses that lost someone in 9/11.
Your smile make me shine
Of the pain you bring to my mind
But when my little girl take my hand
The pain is removed to another land
Thus I miss you everyday
And the picture on the wall keeps me awake
It is now twelve years since last
And you left me as blue as your eyes
But our baby is getting big
And she is so beautiful
She looks like you
And act like me
Therefore I now you will always be
In our hearts forever
We will never forget ya
Rest in piece
