Just got home from watching Suicide Squad and it is a great movie. I have heard a lot about bad reviews, lack of plot and people that do not like the Joker. But I personally think it is well made, there is a good plot and the characters are played spot on with all of their depths.
Let us start with the lack of plot comment there have been spread. It could maybe have been missed by many out there but the plot is actually told quite early by the character Amanda Waller. The premise of the plot goes like this: the world changed when Superman appeared and the metahumans came, but what if Superman had been evil? What if there one day comes an evil metahuman that no one of the good side can take down? So Amanda Waller assemble a team of the best bad guys there exist for when and or if that situation will happen. From there it turns into a self-fulfilling prophecy, Amanda Waller tries to control a powerful metahuman but it backfires and now the Suicide Squad is in need. Besides the whole movie is an origin story for the team, making it possible to use the whole team in another movie, probably in a Batman versus Suicide Squad or maybe even Suicide Squad versus Justice League.
To the Joker comments saying Jared Leto is a bad Joker and the Joker needs more screen time. I will say this. The Joker is not one of the main characters in this story, he is only important for the story because of Harley Quinn. The Joker made Harley Quinn and everything Harley Quinn is, she is for the Joker. The important thing to remember when thinking about Harley Quinn, and I think they captured this perfect, is that Harley Quinn is not just crazy. Harleen Quinzel as she was known before she met the Joker fell so completely in love with the Joker that her mind could not comprehend it and she lost it. Harley Quinn experienced the truest and most powerful form of love that have ever been depicted in any story ever made. She is not suffering from Stockholm syndrome, she did not go crazy from all the torture and abuse the Joker put her through. Harley Quinn had done anything for the Joker no matter what even without her suffering. So everything the Joker is to this movie is to show the many layers of Harley Quinn. Jared Leto plays a great Joker, he shows the abusiveness, the craziness, the possessive nature and his sociopathy. Jared Leto depicts a full on Joker but it is sadly being belittled by his non classical appearance.
I will say this movie all in all is fantastic, the plot is great and with a relevant comment on our society, their is a nice soundtrack, lots of action and emotions, fantastic animation and acting. I have next to no negative comments on this movie. If I had to mention something it would be that some of the fights scenes where a little hard to follow at times and that I wish Deadshot had sounded a little more tormented, Will Smith just do not have the dark brooding tormented sound of a man that have killed more than 1000 men. But really I give this movie a 5 out of 5 stars, nothing less can do.
