So 13 Reasons Why was released on Netflix a good twenty days ago, which makes me a little behind. But it is not entirely my fault for the Danish title is Døde Piger Lyver Ikke (Death Girls Don't Lie) which sounds like a title of a really creepy horror movie. I also had some finals I had to take care of, prioritizing like an adult.
Well 13 Reasons Why is thirteen episode long series adapted from the book Thirteen Reasons Why and is the story about how and why an high school girl choose to commit suicide. The main character Hannah Baker had moved to this new city with her family where she attended high school. Hannah tells her story through thirteen cassette tapes to the people that have had the biggest impact on why she did commit suicide.
The story is intense, emotional and a little extreme and is in contrast to the happy high school movies from the 90's and early 00's. Though I have never seen a real American high school, I believe this series depicts a modern and reality like high school setting and experience. Everything is dark, cold, tense and people do what they can to cope with feelings, insecurities and an enormous amount of pressure, that is worse in America compared to many parts of western Europe. The series clearly tries to push the limits and make us talk and evolve to a better world, which it also succeed in.
It is a great series telling a good story and length is fitting. Thirteen episodes is the right amount of episode in this case and though it is a good series, I really hope they will not make a season two. The story is complete and though it is an open ending, suggesting events like a school shooting, it can not handle a season two. So go watch it, people is saying good things about it.
