Back in 2015 at Halloween I watched Jumanji, the old one, and said it could be cool with a sequel. So when they announced a new Jumanji movie I was ready and have followed the production with excitement.
A dad finds the Jumanji board game and brings it home to his son, who inevitably gets trapped in the game. But this time the board game is evolving, it has reached a time where people find board games boring and therefore changes form to a video game. The boy gets trapped and for twenty years the game stands by until four teens rediscovers it. The four teens are all dealing with some personal problems and after some trouble in school they get detention, where they find the game and gets sucked into it. They are all turned into avatars, that are the incarnation of their exact opposites. From this point they have to finish the game or they are trapped forever.
The movie is in many ways similar to the original movie, following vibe of the world. It is true to the world and story. The game adapts to the time and society it is in and bring people who needs it to Jumanji. And at the same time find the people who is going to save Jumanji.
The Rock, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillian and Nick Jonas seems like an odd combination of many talents and it works. An odd combination of talents is part of the theme in the movie, making it a great cast for the movie. It is of course difficult to play a character that is transformed into another character. The Rock and Kevin Hart are now and then switching between their character and the character in their character but Jack Black is killing it. Never has person played a teen girl trapped in a middle aged man as well a Jack Black does. And Karen Gillian is a bad ass but we already knew she was from Doctor Who and Guardians of the Galaxy.
There are a few scenes that could have used a bit more writing. There are some "big talk" scenes, where a person does not feel brave or adequate enough for the situation and the others are talking them up for the situation. These scenes are a little too eased up. But all in all it is very well done and funny. I will give it four stars for it is beautiful and amazing. I am sure Robin Williams would have loved it.
