Ready Player One - Movie Review

The year is 2045 and the hottest place in the world is the virtual reality world OASIS, where you can do everything and be anything. After the death of OASIS creator a new world wide event unfolds in a virtual challenge to be the next owner of OASIS. Billions of players searches through the world of OASIS in an attempt to find the hidden keys and so does one of the worlds largest gaming companies IOI. IOI wants to win the competition, for controlling OASIS means controlling the world and they will stop at nothing to win, even kill in the real world. For many years there is not much progression in the competition but then one day our hero Wade Watts figures out the clues and solves the first challenge and then everything changes.
The movie runs two stories simultaneously; one in the virtual world where our team of heroes is trying to solve the challenges to find the keys and win the game and one in the real world where our heroes has to hide and survive IOI's attempt on eliminating any competitors. The virtual world and story is great, interesting and beautiful made. But whenever it changes back to the real world inconsistencies follows, not in the story line but in the details. Like for example the users needs a certain level of equipment to play in the virtual world, like the glasses, gloves, controllers, bodysuit and a multi directional treadmill. Some of the equipment is essential like the glasses and you would imagine the treadmill, because they say so and it prevents you from walking into stuff. But on the other hand people play in the virtual world anywhere in the real world, they stand on the streets while playing and with no control over where they walk, they could walk into stuff or get run over. Also the real life story could have been done better, it feels like the real life story was down prioritized but that could be on purpose to further distinct how great virtual world is compared to the real world.
The movie is filled with a lot of good pop culture from the 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's. It is clear that they really tried to give us a movie filled with Easter eggs that we can enjoy searching through. Or that is what I hope fore when I watch a second, third and fourth time. It romanticizes gamers and the gamer community, all that have tried online gaming for a long time knows that gamers can be wile degenerate and really make the gaming hard to enjoy. But it do hit the spot showing that gaming with your friends is really great and fantastic like an adventure. I will give it three and a half star out of five. It is a good and beautiful movie but I did not get that wow feeling and I was not all pumped up and excited after, it needs more pow.
