Solo: A Star Wars Story - Movie Review

We all know Han Solo as the one who did the Kessel run in less than thirteen parsecs and one part of the smuggler duo who later help Luke Skywalker free Princess Leia. And know in this movie we get to see Han Solo in his youth. The young Han Solo is very unlike the older version we now from later on. He is optimistic, arrogant and naive, which portrays a deep character development between the two Han Solos.
The movie starts with Han as an orphan on the planet Corellia where he is surviving as part of a criminal gang. He and the other kids are forced to steal, scam and much more in order to provide their leader with money. But a trade goes wrong and Han loses a large sum of money that were supposed to give to his leader and decides to take the chance of escaping from the gang and the planet. As a last resort Han joins the empire to serve as a pilot, but his rebellious nature makes it hard for him to follow orders and he is punished by been demoted to foot infantry. Here he finds a group of people who plans a job and Han wants to join.
And from here the plot takes a twist to a western cowboy movie set in space. It has gambling, shootouts, betrayals and an outlaw trying to take down his former gang.
With only a few references to the metastory we know about from the other movies, this movie felt somewhat like a stand alone. And unless you are a hardcore Star Wars fan or asks the internet, it is hard to pinpoint the exact place on the timeline the movie happens. It is also very keen in telling the story of how Han Solo became like he did, that it feels like it is rushing through the story. But even though I found the movie a little boring, I will recognize it for doing exactly what it promised. It brought light on the background of Han Solo, which was early something you had to read about. And it showed some more of the vast universe and the dangers living in it.
I will give the movie three out of five stars, it was fine, but unlike The Last Jedi, I do not feel it is necessary to watch this in the cinema.
