Extinction (2018) - Movie Review

Warning this post can contain spoilers
Peter is an engineer working down at the factory trying to earn a living for his family but he is haunted by some weird nightmares of death and destruction and it takes a toll on his family life. Peter is stressed about failing his family and by constantly seeing people he love getting killed by attackers from heaven. While agreeing to speak with a specialist about the dreams he meets another person who has the same experiences and Peter gets the feeling that these dreams are warning him about a pending future.
This movies at first looks like a half assessed alien invasion movie that is foreshadowing the entire plot way to hard. The main character Peter constantly have dreams about something attacking them from the sky and you are just waiting for it to happen so the movie can finally start. And then it finally happens, the attackers arrive and the dreams comes true but it also opens up for an even deeper and better story. Norma
lly alien movies is a question about fearing the dangerous strangers coming to our planet and defending our right to live and our way of life. But as this movie progresses it starts to question what is life and what is the real reality between two parties in a war. Can we erase our memories and create a history sparring us the pain we have suffered? Can we choose to destroy life, just because we created it? And can we trust what the government is saying when joining a war? That is some of the philosophical questions that is hiding during the movie.
Though the start seems slow and boring, it is only build up the plot for the rest of the movie with something new. It was also nice that it did not feel too American. Some alien movies can feel stereotypical American, with the full blooded American pride, the big guns and the white hero yelling freedom. This felt more down to earth and real. I will give it four stars out of five.
