Skyscraper - Movie Review

This may contain spoilers.
After an accident as part of a special hostage rescue team. Will Sawyer played by Dwayne The Rock Johnson ends up as a cripple trying to make his way as self employed safety consultant. With help from an old friend he gets hired to consult on a mega construction; the new record high skyscraper in Hong Kong. Danger is unfortunately lurking around the corner threatening himself and his family. Will Sawyer now has to defy danger and overcome many obstacles to save the life of his family before they burn to death.
That is the plot of Skyscraper and it is probably one of The Rocks best full out action movies. Some might call it a modern take on the great Die Hard that has turned a cult classic Christmas movie.  And yes, Skyscraper share similarities with Die Hard but that does not make it any less worth the watch. The cripple action hero with only one leg, is a welcome twist on any action movie, showing us that even if you are cripple you can still be a functioning member of society and a hero. Actually the movie shows that it is not the incidents of life that defines how it will turn out but our own attitude and what we are willing to do, that defines our life. Will Sawyer lost his leg and almost died, but turned it around and started his own company, giving him the chance to start and provide for his family. Will Sawyer's friend who also had been in the same accident ended up in debt to a crime syndicate. That little detail shows a philosophical depth in the movie. Even the skyscraper itself can be seen as a comment on society; that no matter how hard you work to reach your dream and find your own personal paradise, there will always be someone trying to put you down to satisfy their own greed.
The movie is a great action movie. The sound work is a little too loud; gunshots and punches sounds like small explosions every time. It is advisable to have the sound a little lower than your average movie. The skyscraper itself seems life a beautiful piece of architectonic art but that could just be because I am not a professional architect. I give this movie four stars out of five.
