The original story is quite short and goes something like this: At Christmas eve, the Stalhbaum's where throwing a big Christmas ball and as the presents got handed out the mysterious Drosselmeyer came and with fantastic gifts. One of those gifts were a wooden nutcracker doll that the daughter Clara loved but the son Fritz breaks it.Clara wakes up in the middle of the night to check on the nutcracker and she finds the house filled with mice. The mice has come for the nutcracker and an army of gingerbread men comes to fight them off. Clara helps and saves the nutcracker that becomes alive and turns into a prince. After the fight is over the nutcracker prince takes Clara to the land of Sweets to introduce her to the Sugar Plum Fairy. Then they have a party and a feast and Clara returns home.The story has been adapted and altered many times through out the years and this version has also been altered immensely. This version comes with a new and interesting twist that has not been done before in the Nutcracker history. It still got ballet in it which is lovely bonus as movies rarely contain real ballet.
It is a lovely and wonderful movie with lots of joy and Christmas spirit. I would still rather watch the Nutcracker as ballet over this movie. But it is a good adaption that can introduce more people to the Nutcracker story and to ballet. It also got a big and beautiful magical world that has been designed very nicely. I am inclined to give it four and a half stars out of five for being an all round wholesome movie.
