After many years working as a Professional hitman for Mr. Blut, Duncan is about to retire as his nears his fifty years birthday. He is to receive eight million dollars as he parts from the company unless he dies before retirement, then the money will return to the company. Duncan is looking forward to his new life and his sent on a last mission to kill a man who supposedly has killed some of his colleges but only to discover that he was the real target for the mission. Mr. Blut is trying to kill off old hitmen before they can retire in order to save millions of dollars. Duncan goes into hiding and Mr. Blut sends a team of hitmen out to kill him.
The story of the movie is nothing special except for the subplot that is slowly revealed in the end. You could compare the movie to a slower, darker and grittier version of John Wick. It got similar plot elements. But where John Wick is full out action, Polar adds a beautiful artistic element. Nearly every scene is a perfect picture with the right light and camera position. What it lacks in making the story exceptional it makes up for it in how aesthetic it is.
Beside the story being a little bland the only thing that I found really disappointing was the "Exchange scene". It was building up to Duncan having something great and cool planned and that he was really tricking them instead of getting tricked. And some might say that it was cool what happened. But I felt that they suddenly realised they only had half an hour left of the movie and needed to speed it up with some stupid trick instead of giving us another really cool gun scene. And they could have spent less time on sex scenes and more time on this part. For one of the sex scenes is unnecessary long.
As an action movie I found it slightly disappointing. It could have been better. A man kills off his employees to avoid paying them. It seems like a very short sighted plan that can only end badly. At some point the hitmen would surely realise that killing off people about to retire would also mean that they would be killed off when their time comes. People would either do a ton of preparation to make it impossible for the company to kill them off or they would "unionise" and kill off the leader and instate a leader that does not kill them. But as an artistic movie it is really great and beautifully shot and that is what it really deserves credit for. I will therefore give it three and a half star out of five.
