Vers, a woman, wakes up in Hala the capital of the Kree Empire. She has been training there for six years with no recollection of her life before that. All she knows is that she was in an accident and can shoot cosmic energy rays from her hands. She is about to set out on a mission to retrieve an undercover Kree agent before he is found by the shapeshifting Skrulls. But mission goes wrong and they walk into an ambush where Vers gets captured. The Skrulls puts Vers in an memory extraction machine and finds memories from her life before the accident. Memories from her time and life on earth. Vers uses her powers to break free from her captivity and as luck will have it she is in vicinity of earth. Vers is now in a race against the Skrulls trying to figure out her past and what the Skrulls are after.
The movie has initially been met with much criticism from "fans". First people was unimpressed by the look of Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. Later people get angry and offended by an interview Brie Larson made for her movie a Wrinkle In Time. Many were about to write off the movie because of misinterpreted social justice statements and the following memes trolling Brie. Which would be sad, not because the movie is important for bigger story but because it brings many small background details for characters and different part of the world. Myself, I have been looking forward for a Captain Marvel movie and a movie with the Kree-Skrull war. But I was a little sceptical with the rewrite of Captain Marvel's origin. At first it seemed like they had removed some of her powers and the most important parts of her person. But as the movie progressed it all made sense and the rewrite is good. My biggest problem is that this is not the way I wanted the Kree-Skrull war movie. I would rather have it be an Avengers movie where the two races were to fight over the control of earth because of the its position in the galaxy. It can still happen but now earth is not completely neutral in the war.
The movie is good but it is struggling. It is a movie capable of a deep and vast story but because of its placement on the MCU timeline. It is now one of the earliest movies on the timeline and that opens up for many possible plot holes which they try to prevent by limiting the story. So instead of being an exceptional story about Captain Marvel it becomes an okay story with the purpose of introducing Captain Marvel before the Avengers Endgame movie next month. But again it is not a bad movie, it is just not an incredible movie either. Therefore I will give it three and a half stars out of five.
