As a long time Pokemon fan who have always dreamt of living in a world with real Pokemon this movie make me feel like it was possible. But even better is the fact that the movie is completely enjoyable even for people who has no knowledge of the Pokemon world. It is just a magical world with weird and exciting creatures and a cool detective mystery. But if you are new to the Pokemon world and really wants to know what to watch before this. I would recommend watching the first animated Pokemon movie called Mewtwo Strikes Back. It explains what Mewtwo is how it came to be. But it is not necessary in anyway in order to understand the movie. And if you know something about Pokemon but wants to know how this movie fits in with the series and animated movies. Then this movie has nothing to do with Ash and his friends and it takes place about 20 years after Mewtwo Strikes Back.
The Pokemon are very well made, though some of them might seem a little rubber-ish. But they are all imaginary creatures and it is hard to argue that the texture of their skin would not look like that. So that comes down to the artistic choice. The animation is good which is too be expected from a movie like this where every scene needs a constant flow of decent animation. It could easily contain more animation but they could also easily have drowned the movie in too much animation. So all in all they found a balance that worked.
Ryan Reynolds was a fine choice for Pikachu. He gave it a bit of a trashy foul-mouthed personality which is not unlike Ryan but a bit weird to see something that cute talking like that. It is hard to say who would have been a better choice.
I will give it four stars out of five. It is a good and fun movie for everyone and it got some jokes for the more hardcore fan, like the Ditto eyes. But it lagged a bit of the x factor so to say. I was neither pumped or got some deep emotional feeling after watching it. So it needed some more of a lingering effect in order to get the last star.
