Following Godzilla's awakening in the first movie fear has started spreading around the world. What will it mean for our way of life with this titan monster roaming the world at free will and are there more out there? The company Monarch is trying to find and prevent the monsters from releasing into the world. They do most of their work in secret which causes distrust between the general population. Meanwhile another secret group of nature fanatics wants to let the monsters loose on the world and start over in what will be left.
Godzilla 2 is mainly a kaiju movie. They that there are at least seventeen known kaiju in the movie but it focus on Godzilla, Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan. The other monsters are more for name dropping and is only little to not at all in the movie. And since it is a kaiju movie the story part is going fast. They have some plot points to set up in order for the monster battles to happen. And those are done fine, the plot points are not the main focus of the movie. The main focus is these giant monsters fighting each other. And that is done great. These monsters are enormous and fantastic with a lot of cool effects and though we know the outcome of the battle, it is still exciting to watch.
Now I made it sound like the story is boring or bad. But do not worry. The story is fine with a few twists and some dramatic moments with love and sacrifices. It also scratches the top layer of these monsters mythology. Most of what these monsters are we have to learn from what we see in order to hold up the illusion that they are unknown creatures to most of the world.
Visually it is quite alright. It got all these giant monsters with nice details and they got all sorts of powers that needs many kinds of special effects. I do not think that it got full value out of the visual. I think it is that kind of movie where every single picture around the monsters and fights should have been visually breath-taking and I do not feel it was. It was still visually good but I think it should have been more.
If you do not have interest in monsters or mythological creatures, I would recommend you to watch something ells. It is a two hour movie with main focus on monster battles and that is important to keep in mind when watching it. It is not a deep emotional movie, really romantic or extremely funny. It got its moments but other than that it is monster action. In its category of being a kaiju movie I will give it four out of five stars. It is good but it needed more monsters and more special effects for it to get the last star.
