The old Dark Crystal universe has been revived in a new Netflix series. This series is the story about the events leading up to the original Dark Crystal movie. This series opens up the incredible and mystic world of Thra with several intertwined stories of Gelflings from different social groups and tribes. If you have seen the original movie you know what will ultimately happen and how the relationship will evolve between the different races. There is not many surprises on that point of the plot but it is still interesting of how the world was. If you have not seen the original movie, I will highly recommend waiting till after watching the series. I do not know how many seasons they plan on making but it seems like it will be save for you to watch the original movie after watching this first season of Dark Crystal Age of Resistance.
One of the great things about this series is that it brings back the old puppetry that was used during the movie. Many things in our time gets created with CGI. And they could probably easily have created this entire series with CGI. But they chose to stay true to the original design with puppetry that gives it a more authentic vibe. I am very pleased that they chose to honour the skill and make this series as true to the movie as possible. Both in how they made it but also in the content. This series opens the world up and shows weird, interesting and complex creatures. And it does not interfere with the original story. You might once or twice think "how is this going to add up?" but do not worry for it does. At least it does so far for the first season. Many things can change for future seasons and the creators might decide to rewrite some of the story Jim Henson and Frank Oz has written.
It is a very beautiful and fascinating world not like many others. And if you are a fan of high fantasy stories this can easily compete with the big ones. Personally I feel more impressed by this story than Lord of the Rings but that is a bold thing to say. It is just my personal opinion and I understand if you like Lord of the Rings better. But you should definitely watch this. I think I will give it four and a half stars out of five. The whole "sword with mighty power" thing feels outdated. I mean how can a sword be mighty? Unless it give you some magical power that prevents your enemies from just killing you, chop your hand off or do anything that makes you drop your sword it all comes down to how good you are at fencing. And if the sword gives some long ranged powers then why make it a sword and not something ells. There need to be something better than just a powerful weapon and there is but they still use the "powerful weapon" thing which I deduct half a star for.
An extra thought for the philosophical thinkers.
Some or all of the Mystics knows of their connection to the Skeksis. And when they at some point learns of the atrocities that the Skeksis will bring they have the power to stop it by ending their own lives. But they choose not to do so because of understandable reasons. But does that not make the Mystics as evil as the Skeksis for they can at any point stop all the evil and never does. Why is the life of the Mystics worth more than stopping genocides?
