Joker - Movie Review

Arthur Fleck, a severely depressed, traumatized and mentally ill man is working as a clown and trying to make it as a comedian. He use all his money on taking care of his mother and can barely afford to eat himself. Meanwhile the economical tension in the streets of Gotham grows dire as the rich behaves entitled and the poor receives the hard end of the stick. Arthur loses his job, the funding to his medical care gets cut, he gets public humiliated and secrets are revealed, it all leads to him turning into the Joker.
Joker is a villain origin story that just like Maleficent proves that you can create a good movie with the villain as the protagonist. A villain does not have to only exist as an opposing character to the hero but can be good and strong character in itself. It is a good story and plot with a comment on society saying that if you keep oppressing the people someone will either rise up to create a change or society will break in a mass riot. It also tells a story of the Joker's character and how that there is not a single specific factor that makes a man the Joker. But anything can be the ultimate trigger and send a man over the edge. This Joker has so many possible triggers and still manages to ask the question, was it society, his upraising or was he born evil. This movie also ends up as the creation of Batman showing that there may not be just one single Joker but many as this Joker around sixty or seventy when he fights Batman later in life.
But is this movie as good as everyone says it is? I would say no. It is a good movie but I am not mind blown impressed. It reminds me of a modern version of Clockwork Orange with the Joker as the main character. Joaquin Phoenix is a good actor and puts his own personal touch on Joker but I find him too soft and not psychotic enough. And that may be because there are so many different versions of the Joker to compare to. Many will say that this Joker is better than Jared Leto's version of the Joker but they have more similarities than people would like to acknowledge. Joaquin Phoenix's Joker is emotional, needy and obsessive, he constantly seeks attention, validation and acts out when he is emotionally hurt or scared. Much like Jared Leto's Joker but people are more disapproving of this Joker because of how he looks instead of acts. Where Heath Ledger's Joker, who is acclaimed to be one of the best, is chaotic and psychopathic. He is without emotions and just want to create pain, chaos and show that everybody is basically evil. So what is it I do not like about this movie. This might spoil. So warning alert. I do not find the Joker evil or psychotic enough, he tries so hard to be a good person and a member of society. He accidentally and unintentionally starts an uprising and sends the city on the brink of collapse. And then he tells people that there was no meaning with the murders and it was an accident. Some unknown commoners did all the work and Joker claims it all in his name. You could say that the only effect that the Joker had on the overall story was that he accidentally ignited the flame of resistance and that it would most likely have happened no matter what people just needed a symbol to follow. He may be an ever better and more incredible Joker if it gets a sequel where he gets to unfold the evil sides. Arthur Fleck's personal story on the other hand is well made and good. And it is therefore I will give this movie four out of five stars.
