The two elf brothers Barley and Ian lost their dad before Ian was born. Barley only has a few memories left. They both wishes that they could meet their dad one day. And on Ian's birthday they are given a wizard staff from their dad with a spell that can bring him back for one day and one day only. But something goes wrong as they use the spell and they only summon their dad's legs. They now have twenty-four hours to find away to fix the spell and meet their dad before this chance passes them by. And so they take out on a dangerous adventure.
This movie is three things. First it is a fun road-trip movie where two brothers have a great personal development. Lots of fun and stupid things. Just really great. Secondly it is a movie that has focus how important our history is. Just because something is old, out of style or forgotten it does not it has lost its usefulness. Several characters learn this fact throughout the movie. We need to remember who we were, what we did and what we could do in order to fully understand who we are and what we can do. And thirdly this movie is about family. Dan Scanlon who wrote and directed this story, he and his older brother had lost their dad before Dan could meet him. And one day Dan went through his dads old audiotapes where he found a little piece of his dads voice on, very much like the main character Ian. So he used this experience to write this story as a thank you note to his brother for being there for him throughout his childhood. The movie is very fun and very emotional. I even let out a tear and it is difficult for to cry. So I find that as an acknowledgement for how well it done.
It is a great movie for the whole family. Though it got silly and stupid moments I would also say it is part of the more mature section of the Disney and Pixar movies. Some would mention the openly lesbian police officer and of course it is great that she is there. But she is a very minor character and her being a lesbian is only mentioned by her saying "my wife" once. So calling her openly lesbian is kind of stretching it just for some cheap points. But let us call it a learning curve for now. (I do hope to see a good written gay main character at one point)
You should definitely watch it. I will give it five stars out of five. I would have liked a big heartfelt song. But they chose not to and I can not deduct them points just because I really love the big Disney songs. So five stars.
