Secret Society of Second-Born Royals - Movie Review

Five unruly second born royals are sent two a special summer school where it is revealed that every second born royal has super powers. The second born royals has for many generations served as the secret protectors of the royal families around the world. While the five kids are taught how to use their powers a dangerous prisoner escapes from a top secret prison with a devious plot.

The plot of this movie is sort of original as it combines a secret society of super heroes with an upper class royal successor plot. But it could have used a second and third revision. Firstly the chance of there being five second born royals at the same age throughout Europe is kind of unlikely. There are only twelve monarchies left in Europe and only ten are hereditary. Secondly the power of monarchies in Europe are next to non-existing. Most of the monarchies has no influence on the political state of the country and is more or less serving as a national symbol. Thirdly there is no gene that only works for second born royals. That is not how genes works. If every second born royal had a super power gene it would pretty much mean that all second born royals are related. And since no first born royals have the gene they are probably not related to the second born royals. It is 2020 and the general knowledge of genetics have long surpassed this bad writing. Even calling it a magically bestowed gift would have been a better explanation. If the movie had been set in medieval setting it could have worked but in a modern world Europe it is miss-match. But it is not all bad. It is a different and creative take on a hero movie and they work with some new alternative powers instead of the usual power like strength and genius.

Both the acting and special effects are just slightly above mediocre just as one would expect from a movie produced by Disney Channel. Several of the powers are low-visual or non-visual, like invisibility, super senses, command, power steal, water breathing and telekinetic. It is quite minimal what they have to use as special effects for the powers. But what they save in special effects they have to put into acting. And the acting is acceptable, it is not breathtaking or anything, just okay.

The movie is cute and a little fun. I imagine it works fine as a gate-way movie to hero movies and royal society movies. Tweens will probably find it enjoyable to watch. I am going to give Secret Society of Second-Born Royals two and a half stars.
