Due to complication with pregnancy Liz Logelin is having a premature c-section which afterwards results in her dying and leaving her newborn daughter and husband alone. Matthew Logelin feeling unprepared does the best he can taking care of his daughter but the feeling of inadequacy haunts him. And when work asks him to take more responsibility he has to make some tough choices.
Fatherhood is a somewhat somber movie telling the real story of how Matthew Logelin was dealing with his grief and single parenthood. It cooks a period of seven years of struggling down to a hundred minutes movie. And though it is dealing with some deep and emotional situations, it is very romanticized and washed. The reason for this could be to more precisely depict the real life struggles of Matthew Logelin. I respect any choice to stay true to the story. But I think it should have turned up for the emotional aspect of the story and dug deeper into the struggle of being a single dad.
With the serious tone and topic of Fatherhood it might feel weird to see Kevin Hart as the main character. But he shows great range in the way he plays this struggling and laid back person instead of his usual loud and explosive characters. It is a very different Kevin Hart from what you are used to but it is very well performed.
I will give Fatherhood four out of five stars. It is a great movie and a lovely story that deserves to be told. There are many people out there who struggles with single parenthood and needs support. But I would have loved more emotional depth. This is the kind of movie that could have had people on the edge of crying all the way through it but I did not feel it.
