The Suicide Squad - Movie Review

After a military coup in Corto Maltese Amanda Waller deploys a new Suicide Squad unit to deal with the threat the new regime poses to the United States. The country has for many years been working on a top secret weapon project called Project Starfish. But as soon as the team lands on the coast everything turns bad as someone betrayed them to the Corto Maltese army.

The Suicide Squad is the second Suicide Squad movie and takes place some time after the Birds Of Prey movie. But only few characters make a re-appearance, like Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Rick Flag and Amanda Waller. Otherwise it is an entire new Suicide Squad showcasing more than ten new faces of DC's more obscure villains. But with that many new characters some might say that, that was part of the problem with the first Suicide Squad and Birds Of Prey. That there were too many characters that did not get properly integrated and utilized in the story. But luckily that was not a problem for James Gunn who through the use of chapters got screen time and plot points for all of the main characters. There of course were some sacrificial characters who were thrown in to underline the constant risk of dying.

In general you could say that James Gunn watched the first movie and noted all the things fans did not like and improved upon it. Better flow in the story, easier to follow the plot, better utilizing of the characters and their stories, not being as visually dark and a more impressive boss battle. But the keen watcher might note the similarities in the plot between the first and second Suicide Squad movie. However to avoid spoilers I will not go in depth with this.

But it is not only James Gunn who made this movie so good. It got a long cast list who brought their characters to life in very impressive acting. I have already praised Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn twice earlier and still absolutely love it. But John Cena made me fall in love with the extremely vigilant and chaotically good Peacemaker. An absolute giant dick of a character that will do anything in the fight for peace. John Cena portrayed him perfectly and in combination with Idris Elba's Bloodsport it is a great action and comedic duo. I have earlier thought that Idris Elba was a bit boring as an actor. I was not entirely sold on him in The Dark Tower or Thor. But as Bloodsport I am all in. And I could praise the others I have to end this review at some point.

I think this is a five star movie. It got great action with amazing fight scenes full blood and gore. It got great comedy and many small hidden jokes. It got a bit of emotions and wholesomeness. And it is a great story with great acting and effects. So five out of five stars.
