Many have already claimed Morbius as the worst Marvel movie and semi jokingly pinning it on the lead actor, Jared Leto. Unfairly I would claim, the movie has several reasons for being within the lowest scoring Marvel movies but Jared is not one of them. Jared does a great job portraying a sick man who will do everything he can to help people while an uncontrollable power tries take over. First off the plot is written like a classic early 2000 superhero movie. The main guy who is a genuine good person develops a destructive uncontrollable power he will have to fight or cure before its wrath is unleashed on the world. The secondary guy wants and give into the power and now the main guy has to stop him. Seen it many times before, The Hulk, Spider-man 3, Venom and more, this plot is generally not that good. It should rather have dived more into the struggle between doing good and the primal power that wants to kill. Also though Doctor Michael Morbius is a good man who wants to help the world, he is not a "hero" and the movie should have included either Spider-man or Blade to try and hunt him down while he was dealing with his problems. A big problem with the Anti-hero genre is that it continuously puts focus and emphasis on the "hero" part. In series and comics we can easily create storylines where the villain is the main character and wins or gets away because story will spill over into the next issue or season or even series and will be handled. But in movies the hero always have to win; movie makers do not dare to let the villain win and that breaks the Anti-hero and Villain stories.
Secondly, and this part will include spoilers, the ending is bad. It is like they looked at the time and just said "well we are out of time, fix something quick". So of course the ending comes down to the big battle between Morbius and Milo, good versus evil. Morbius has prepared two injections that can kill them, one intended for Milo and one intended for himself, for he is running out of time and is losing the battle with the power inside him and he will not be a blooddrinker like Milo. Milo somehow gets a hold on the female lead and mortally wounds her for Morbius to find. And she asks him to drink her blood, just thirty minutes after he told her that he would not drink blood. Morbius gives in and then the real fight begin. Milo is winning, he mortally wounds Morbius and is taking his triumphant position. But Morbius uses his echolocation powers to summon a thousand bats to swarm around him and he is suddenly okay. Milo launches for an attack but is held of by the bats and Morbius stabs him with the death cure. And then it ends, Morbius is completely okay and in control of his powers; he does not have to use the other death cure on himself. And there was no struggle where he lost one death cure in the battle and had to choose between killing himself and let Milo loose on the city or killing Milo and losing himself. It is just okay and then the end credits scenes comes and makes it even worse.
Those reasons are the biggest points in why Morbius is not a good movie. There are small details as well, like one of the agents (normal human) scaling at least ten floors after seeing Morbius doing it in two jumps and still get to the roof mere seconds after Morbius to catch him. Or including two shirtless scenes; Jared Leto's scene was okay as it showed how he turned from sick and undernourished man into a strong healthy man. But there was no need for a scene where Matt Smith dances around shirtless and shows off his muscular body. I mean I like watching clips of Matt Smith dancing, but the scene was unnecessary for the plot.
When all that is said it is still overall and okay movie. The animations and CGI is on point, the acting is good. It is easy to watch for those new to comic book movies and it is still better than Venom: Let there be Carnage. I am going to give it two and a half star. A bad Marvel movie is still an okay movie as Marvel in general produces high quality movies.
