Hocus Pocus 2 - Movie review

It has been twenty-nine years since the Sanderson sisters was defeated last time and everything in Salem seems fine. It is the night of Halloween and also Becca's birthday. Becca and her friend Izzy are both into magic and witchcraft and every year on Halloween they perform a ritual to bring them good fortune but this year something goes wrong and they accidentally bring back the Sanderson sister. Becca and Izzy manages to outwit the three witches but it only inspires the sisters to forego their plan of sucking the life out of children and instead seek to perform a ritual providing them with great power.

Hocus Pocus 2 is the long awaited sequel to the Halloween classic Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy reprising their roles as the Sanderson sisters. They are bringing many fun and exciting whacky situations and great musical numbers. And just like the first movie they do a fantastic job playing witches in a time three hundred years more advanced than their own.The story is a good follow up and gives a somewhat satisfying end to the legend of the Sanderson sister while also opening up for new Hocus Pocus era.

This movie brings you right into the cosy Halloween mood and is quite possible a new Halloween classic. It brings the fun of Hocus Pocus to a new generation. It is more family friendly and got less romance than the first but it also got twice the amount of big musical performances. Overall it is just as good as the first movie except it lacks the nostalgia, which it makes up for in references and easter eggs. They literally have a scene where a couple is watching the first movie. And I find this especially interesting story-wise for it opens up a discussion on whether the first Hocus Pocus did happen or not. It also could explain why Max Dennison, Dani Dennison and Allison Watts are not in this movie.

It is a magical movie and I am surely going to watch it a couple more times this Halloween season and every future Halloween. If you are into family Halloween movies then Hocus Pocus 2 is worth it. It feels like its main problem is that there is not more of it. But I will only give it four out of five stars. It does not feel perfect, it feel really great but not perfect. And I am not completely satisfied with the flashback scene that explains how the Sanderson sisters came to be evil witches.
