Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania - Movie Review

In an attempt to better understand the quantum realm without the dangers of exploring it in person, Cassie Lang and Hank Pym creates a sub-atomic probe to collect and retrieve data. However, something goes wrong and the machine malfunctions pulling the entire Ant-Man and Wasp team down into the quantum realm. They soon learn that, it is not the vast emptiness they thought it was, instead it is an entirely different universe dominated and controlled by a ruthless conqueror, Kang.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is the third Ant-Man movie and together with the Loki series is setting up the next big bad guy for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It re-introduces Kang and establishes the level of threat he poses to the universe and all other universes and it opens phase 5 of the MCU with a bang. If you are wondering how much you have to watch to be ready for this movie, then you are in luck. I of course recommend you to watch everything that is part of the MCU but you only have to watch the first two Ant-Man movies and Infinity War and Endgame. Not even the Loki series is necessary to watch, they function more like parallel introductions to Kang.

This movie is very visually interesting. The quantum realm is a very abstract universe where the visual artist can do almost anything with their designs and the visual artist clearly took this to heart. This of course it not the first time we get to see the quantum realm but it is the first time we really get to explore it. They have created so many weird and interesting creatures and the landscaping is very beautiful. The only question is: Why are there so many human-like characters in the quantum realm?

It is a funny movie with a good plot that sets the tone of phase 5. Not as comically funny as the earlier Ant-Man movies but still funny. I do believe that in order to really emphasize the dangers of Kang for the future of MCU, they should have killed off a character or two, probably Hank Pym or Janet Van Dyne. So far the Ant-Man and Wasp team did not get any punishment for their actions.

Though the Ant-Man movies have not been my favourite MCU movies because of the way they started with Scott Lang instead of starting from Hank Pym, I will give Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania a solid four and a half star out of five. There are a few details that could have been worked on like: The whole time works differently in the quantum realm is a little too vague and dues ex machina, there is no consistency. They also did not explain why the growing and shrinking power worked normally even though they shrunk into the quantum realm; like why could they not just grow their way out and why did the giant form cause them to use excessive energy when they are still smaller than their normal form. It is of course because of the way they were transported into the quantum realm; they did not use Pym particles to shrink but was shrunk through some kind of quantum hole.
