Shazam! Fury of the Gods - Movie Review

The magical barrier that holds the realm of the Gods confined from the mortal world has broken. The daughters of Atlas come to earth to seek out the champion of Shazam and reclaim the magic in him and restore their realm to its former glory. But the daughter Kalypso does not think it is enough and wants to punish the human kind for what the wizards did.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a fun superhero movie about the found family and the fear of growing apart. It is filled with many fun moments but with a slightly more serious tone than the first Shazam movie. Whereas the first movie was more focussed on the part of a teenager becoming a superhero, the second movie focus on the changes that time brings. Billy Batson never really had a family before and is really struggling with the natural changes that comes and his own identity and self worth while also having to deal with three Goddesses. A real superhero movie with many aspects to it.

The visuals are as the visuals are. With any movie containing superheroes and magic there is a lot of artistic freedom for the visual artist to express themselves. This does require a large amount of CGI effects, there is just no way around it and it looks beautiful. But there will with no doubt be people out there who will disagree because they either dislike CGI or are very keen on finding some visual flaws. And they might be some parts where the CGI is shaky or slightly off, however overall it is very beautiful and well made.

Shazam has some great casting and the addition of Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler as the daughters of Atlas just improves on the original cast. To watch Helen Mirren play a Goddess who beats up Zachary Levi is just perfect. There is nothing that this actress can not play. And Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler are stars in their own right who brings a lot of personality to the movie.

In some ways is Shazam! Fury of the Gods better than the first and in other ways it about equal to it. There are some aspects that could have been improved, like the story and dialogue could have been tightened a bit more up giving room for even more but it would also take away from some of its charm as a comedic awkward teen in an adult body superhero movie. So I am going to give it four out of five stars as I did with the first.
