Peter Pan & Wendy (2023) - Movie Review

As Wendy Darling stands on the edge of growing up, she and her two brothers, John and Michael, are visited by the fun loving and adventures Peter Pan, who takes them away to Neverland. Unfortunately, at their arrival, they are shot out of the sky by Captain Hook and caught in a long standing battle between the pirates and the lost boys.

Peter Pan & Wendy is a live action adaptation of the classic and beloved Peter Pan and Wendy story. There have been many cinematic adaptations of Peter Pan, this time it is done by Disney as part of their project of making live action adaptations of their animated movies. Initially it looks and feels a lot like the 2003 Peter Pan but it very quickly twist the story with another focus. It also includes more modern values, despite being a story set in the early 1900. An example of this is that the Lost boys, though still called the Lost boys, are now including girls as all children can get lost. They chose to make this a comment in the movie instead of simply just changing it to the Lost children. Despite including the Lost boys in the movie, they play a very small part in the over all plot. The same is to be said about Tiger Lily, Tinkerbell, John and Michael; none of them seem to have been given much personality. Instead it does elaborate on the backstory of Captain Hook and establishes a deep relationship between him and Peter. This is in no way a complain about any of the actors, who all did a great job, their roles were just limited by the story.

Peter Pan & Wendy is visually quite average to look at. It is pretty and there is nothing major to complain about but it brings nothing new. Compared to other adaptations of Peter Pan it is a little plain. The colour scheme, the costumes and the world in general has been toned down to give it a more natural look, which does take away a lot of the magic in the story. And as for Disney's live action movies based on their classic animated, this is yet another one that feels unnecessary. I will give this movie two and a half star out of five. I have now seen several adaptations and read the book and this is the less exciting option in my opinion. My recommendation is to watch the 2003 Peter Pan directed by P. J. Hogan instead as it overall is a better and more magical experience and has more emotional depth to it.
