The Marvels - Movie Review

While investigating an anomaly with the subspace gateways Captain Marvel a Kree plot to steal natural resources from other planets in order to resurrect the Kree home world, Hala. A situation that would have been easy to handle for Captain Marvel but unfortunately, the anomaly entangles her with Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan and now they swap position across space whenever they use their powers.

The Marvels is the second Marvel movie with Captain Marvel as a main character and like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it serves a passing of the torch to the new generation. Even though the plot revolves around a Kree leader who wants revenge on Captain Marvel for being the reason that Hala is now on the verge of collapsing, the real story is about how Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel, meets her idol and becomes a greater hero. Throughout the movie, Kamala is mentored in fighting and conflict resolution by both Monica Rambeau and Captain Marvel, setting her up to play a bigger part in the future of the MCU. This, like in Doctor Strange in Multiverse of Madness, results in a plot that could have been better and some very questionable science. For once, I am pretty sure you can not transfer a planets atmosphere by creating a subspace portal between two planets. Also transferring the air and atmosphere from one planet to a planet where the sun is doing would be a useless and very temporary solution since there would not be any plant life during to the lack of a sun. Secondly, if a planet's sun is going extinct, the planet would freeze to death and there would not be anyone left to save. Despite the less than great plot in The Marvels, it is still a fun superhero movie with a unique interesting gimmick like something you would expect to find in an actual comic book.

SPOILER WARNING. The destruction of the S.A.B.E.R space station feels like the biggest flaw in the movie. S.A.B.E.R falls due to malfunctions caused by Goose laying eggs all over the place and just as all hope seems out the eggs hatch and they use the flerken kittens to eat all of the workers and transport everyone to safety. A whole scene that has nothing to do with either the plot or the main story and it is problem where the solution to the problem, is the problem itself. Yes, it is fun and cute, but the time used for this scene could have been better spend if distributed to other scenes. Personally I believe there could have been used more time on exploring Aladna as Captain Marvel turns out to be the princess of that planet. Or Captain Marvel could have had a more emotional scene after having to abandon Aladna after getting defeated.

When all this is said, I did enjoy watching The Marvels. I found it fun, beautiful and interesting with a lot of good aspects. I mean there was a planet where everyone communicates through song. Also, Iman Vellani brings a contagious and joyous energy and she really embodies Kamala Khan. However, the movie is very likely going to flop, not because of the critique I have mentioned but because the average comic book guy does not like Brie Larson nor her portrayal of Captain Marvel. They will once again use CGI as an excuse to justify why they do not like the movie and maybe find one single frame where the CGI is less than perfect like with Thor: Love and Thunder. I am going to give The Marvels three and a half star out of five. It could have been better but it is definitely not bad.
